The new Act affecting landlords and tenants came in to effect on June 17, 1998

Disputes are transferred out of the Courts to the new Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal.  The Tribunal will hear and decide on disputes between landlords and tenants about rights and responsibilities including rent increases, evictions and privacy issues.

New Severe Time Limits: If a landlord applies to the Tribunal, he must give the tenant a Notice  which gives the date for hearing. UNLESS A WRITTEN DISPUTE IS FILED WITH THE TRIBUNAL WITHIN FIVE DAYS OF RECEIVING THE NOTICE, THERE WILL NOT BE A HEARING! AND AN EVICTION ORDER MAY BE ISSUED.

To dispute the matter in the Notice, the tenant must file a written dispute within 5 days of getting the Notice. If the tenant does not file a written dispute, there will not be a hearing and an order will be signed on default.  Simply showing up at the Tribunal on the hearing day will no longer be an indication of dispute.  It must be in writing and filed with the Tribunal within FIVE days of receiving a Notice. Disputes can be faxed to the Tribunal.  Contact your local legal clinic or tenant help line for more information. The Tribunal can be reached 24 hours a day, tool-free at:1-888-332-3234Fax (416) 585-6363 The Tribunal also has a web site at: http://www.orht.gov.on.ca

Usually the way to get home care, etc. is to have your family doctor do the referral to the agency. Most services to the disabled, ill and so on rely on the doctor referring the patient to the services. Often they don't do it. There may be many free services available.
Community Care Access of the Ontario Ministry of Health can assign a Care Coordinator to assess needs and supply free services.

This evening tenants of 40 and 60 Tyndall Avenue in Parkdale publicly condemned their buildings as not fit for housing.
